Hard Work and Patience to Master the Art
There is something special about working the earth, caring for the vines and nurturing the grapes to create a product that is marketed with pride and savoured by the consumer. The satisfaction that comes from working with grapes, creating and tasting the fruits of one's labour is best expressed through the words of those who do it best. "Few things in life can match walking through the vineyards, touching the vines, and tasting the fruit", says Hanspeter Stutz of Domaine de Grand Pré.
The lifestyle, intrigue and challenge is appealing to many and in recent years not only experienced winegrowers are coming here but inquires flow from many who wouldn't have considered a career or opportunities in the industry before.
But it is not for the timid or restless. It takes hard work and patience to master the art of grape growing, winemaking and to become the producer of truly great wine.
And there is the challenge of Nova Scotia's terroir though wonderfully unique it demands experimentation, often trial and error, to produce superior wines. Its soil compositions and climatic conditions mingle to create distinctive premium grapes. The combination of ocean influence and agricultural microclimates support interesting, aromatic, intensely flavoured wines with body, depth and character that can't be replicated putting many Nova Scotia wines in a class of their own.
